Truckee's First Restaurant Month Counts Every Photo You Upload

October 15, 2026

"We're trying to keep all of these reasonably priced and focusing on both getting our residents to enjoy our restaurants during slow time as well as bringing new visitors to the area," Truckee Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jessica Penman told the Sierra Sun ahead of Taste of Truckee's launch.

Taste of Truckee runs Oct. 1 through 31, 2026, as a joint project of the Chamber and Visit Truckee-Tahoe. It is the town's first monthlong restaurant promotion. As of Oct. 12, about three weeks remain. Check-ins logged in those weeks are part of how organizers will judge whether the first year worked, and they have said they hope it becomes an annual event.

Why the Chamber picked October

The timing came from the restaurants. In March, the Chamber surveyed local restaurants on whether they would take part in a restaurant month, when it should run, and which promotions would work. That feedback led organizers to October. Organizers told the Sierra Sun that many owners live in town, employ local workers, and run businesses that are especially vulnerable in the shoulder seasons, when visitor traffic slows.

The event also has to compete with habit. Organizers estimate there are more than 80 restaurant-type businesses in Truckee and Northstar, a number they think may surprise even longtime residents. Part of the stated goal is getting people out of their usual routines and into a place they have overlooked or assumed was out of their price range. Just over two dozen of those businesses signed on for year one. That works out to roughly a third of the town's eating and drinking options, each offering an easy reason to try them this month.

The passport is how the event measures itself

The digital passport works like a scorecard. Here is how it works, according to Visit Truckee-Tahoe's event page:

  1. Sign up on your phone with no app to download.
  2. Pick a participating restaurant and order its Taste of Truckee offer.
  3. Snap a photo and upload it through the pass to check in.
  4. Each check-in is an entry to win one of four $100 Sustainable Truckee gift cards, and more restaurants mean more entries.

The Sierra Sun reported that the drawing runs weekly. The Sustainable Truckee gift card is a digital card accepted at dozens of local restaurants, breweries, shops, and service businesses. Visit Truckee-Tahoe matches 25% of the value of each card sold, up to $12,500, toward local stewardship projects.

The check-ins also feed the organizers' evaluation. "We wanted to make it really easy for people to discover the deals but also understand how many people checked into each restaurant and help our partners understand what really moved the needle," Visit Truckee-Tahoe Executive Director Jackie Calvert told the Sierra Sun. Organizers hope Taste of Truckee becomes an annual event and eventually adds signature events. A meal eaten without a check-in won't show up in that count.

What the three tiers actually buy

The tiers were built loose on purpose, so that coffee shops and breakfast spots could take part alongside higher-end dining rooms. The Truckee Bite starts at $5, the Pour & Taste pairs one dish with one drink starting at $15, and the Experience Menu is a three-course prix fixe at $35, $55, or $75. Some restaurants have stretched the format with their own names and prices.

Spend Where What you get
$6 Mountain Brew Medium house or mountain blend coffee and a pastry
$10 Stella Haus-made focaccia with balsamic and olive oil
$12 Mehfil Indian Bistro Two samosas or vegetable pakora plus beer, wine, or mango lassi
$15 Alibi Ale Works Pork belly bao and eggplant bao with a pint or Hoppy Hour
$15 Buoy & Trap A half dozen fresh oysters
$18 Cloud Sushi Three pieces of chef's choice nigiri with Orion beer or small hot sake
$25 Craft + Logic Three 5 oz. pours as a flight with three bites
$35 Cottonwood Restaurant Soup or salad, then cider-braised pork shoulder or farro-stuffed delicata squash
$35 Great Gold Sunflower Caesar, mushroom lasagna, cannoli
$49 Pianeta Ristorante House wine, soup or Florentine salad, pasta, chocolate pavé
$55 Rubicon Pizza Large salad, large pizza, dessert or soda pitcher; serves four
$69 Bar of America Three courses with prime rib, BBQ chicken, or sea bass
$85 Tangerine Four-course tasting menu with off-menu dishes

The low end of the table answers the "outside your price range" problem the organizers described. A $15 pairing at Alibi's 10069 Bridge St. taproom costs about what a lunch out already does. Bar of America's prime rib menu at $69 and Tangerine's tasting menu at $85 are set prices for meals at the top of the list.

A few smaller notes from the official list. Moody's Bistro Bar & Beats is changing its $55 menu throughout the month based on what's in season. FiftyFifty Brewing Co. is pairing a smoked Emmental-stuffed bratwurst with its Oktoberfest Vienna Lager for $20. Rubicon Pizza is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

At Mehfil in Deerfield Plaza, the restaurant-month offer sits on top of a weekly program. Under owner RJ Kumar, Mehfil runs Tuesday Crew Night, with complimentary entrées for first responders and a $15 meal for hospitality staff, teachers, and other local workers. The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except Wednesday.

The newest restaurant on the list is still half-built

The Social at Matices fits the organizers' description of a changing food scene. The Sierra Sun counted new restaurants and changing ownership as evidence of that change. The Social opened at 10164 Donner Pass Rd. by mid-September. It is the casual first half of a two-part concept from owner Amié Fitzhugh, whose experience co-owning Pianeta down the street shaped how Matices handles hospitality and large groups, according to the Sierra Sun. Pianeta lists its address as 10096 Donner Pass Rd.

For Taste of Truckee, Matices is offering a $26 Pour & Taste. It pairs smoked pork belly skewers with aji panca glaze, sweet potato purée, and crispy potato with a glass of Malbec or Torrontés. The rest of the menu leans Spanish and South American, using French and Japanese techniques. Staff have found that some first-time guests expect an entrée-and-sides meal, so servers encourage sharing and ordering as you go. Matices' site lists hours of noon to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with Social Hour from 3 to 5 p.m. Reservations are available and walk-ins are welcome.

The more refined Matices dining room is still listed as "opening in Fall 2026" without a date. Fitzhugh told the Sierra Sun the team had no firm opening date and wants to be ready for whatever season it opens into. She also said it won't be formal: "If you want to roll off the ski hill and come in in something that's comfortable, we will welcome you that way as well."

Two stops up the hill in Tahoe Donner

Two participants sit inside Tahoe Donner. The Lodge Restaurant & Pub is serving a $55 three-course menu that changes weekly through the month. Alder Creek Cafe lists a $15 Truckee Bite of two tacos and a canned beer, with carne asada, grilled fish, or a vegan Korean BBQ mushroom. Alder Creek Cafe's own page shows a "Closed for Season" banner next to posted Wednesday through Sunday hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., so confirm before driving over.

What's left on the calendar, and what isn't settled

  • Oct. 9–31: Truckee Cookies' $10 four-cookie Taster Box, including a new London Fog Latte Cookie, is available to order online.
  • Monday, Oct. 19, 5:45–8 p.m.: HeyChef! hosts a free dinner for six guests at a private Truckee location. The chef and menu are a surprise, an advance request is required, and guests are asked to bring a beverage to share and a cash tip for the chef.
  • Through Oct. 31: The Pour House pours a different signature glass each week for passport holders.

A few details were still moving as of Oct. 12. Trokay's $75 Experience Menu reads "Details coming soon!" on the official page. The final participant count is also open. The Chamber's Sept. 29 newsletter said 25 restaurants, the live page lists more, and restaurants can still join mid-month, though late additions may not appear in printed materials. The only results anyone has so far are in the passport, and the event runs through Oct. 31.
