Tahoe Donner's Golf Course Just Turned 50. Most of What You're Playing Is Five.

Tahoe Donner Golf Course celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026. The front nine opened in 1975, followed by the back nine in 1976, completing the 18-hole golf course in Truckee, California. After more than four decades of play, the course closed for the 2020 season for a major greens replacement and improvement project before reopening in May 2021.
On Sunday, September 20, Tahoe Donner will celebrate that history while also honoring a member of the community.
The 2026 Tahoe Donner Memorial Golf Tournament begins with a noon shotgun start, followed by an anniversary happy hour open to golfers and non-golfers alike. Tournament proceeds benefit the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund in memory of Ali Kovach.
The event marks 50 years since Tahoe Donner completed its original 18-hole golf course.
What's less obvious, particularly if you've only played Tahoe Donner Golf Course during the last few seasons, is just how much of the playing experience has changed since the course first opened.
Tahoe Donner Golf Course didn't open all at once.
Roy Williams designed the front nine, which opened in 1975. Billy Bell Jr. designed the back nine, which followed in 1976 and completed the 18-hole course.
That's an important distinction because Tahoe Donner celebrated another 50th anniversary only five years ago.
The Tahoe Donner community traces its beginnings to 1971 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021. The completed 18-hole golf course reached the same milestone in 2026.
So this isn't a repeat of the community-wide anniversary. It's a separate milestone in Tahoe Donner history.
One of the more interesting pieces of Tahoe Donner Golf Course history is that its two nines were designed by different architects.
Roy Williams designed the front nine, while Billy Bell Jr. designed the back nine.
Despite subsequent improvements, much of the course's original routing has been preserved.
The course underwent another significant period of renovation from 2003 through 2006 under golf course architect Cary Bickler, with work that modernized elements including bunkers, tee boxes and irrigation.
The renovation subsequently earned Tahoe Donner a nomination from Golf Digest for Best Remodeled Golf Course.
But another, much larger problem eventually needed to be addressed.
Golf course greens have a finite lifespan.
Tahoe Donner's own project history notes that approximately 20 years is a general rule of thumb for replacing golf course greens. Some of Tahoe Donner's greens remained in service for more than 40 years.
By 2018, the Tahoe Donner men's and women's golf clubs had raised concerns with the General Plan Committee, and a Golf Subcommittee was formed to examine what would be required to address the aging course.
The answer ultimately became a major renovation rather than another round of routine maintenance.
Tahoe Donner moved forward with more than $2 million in golf course improvements, including replacement of all of the greens and improvements to selected tees, fairways, drainage and cart paths.
Cary Bickler, who had been involved with the earlier Tahoe Donner renovation, returned to provide architectural guidance.
The project was significant enough that Tahoe Donner Golf Course closed for the entire 2020 season.
Rather than keeping portions of the course open while construction proceeded, all 18 holes were closed while the work was completed.
At the center of the project was the replacement of every putting green.
More than 3.5 acres of new creeping bentgrass were installed. The grass was selected in part for its ability to withstand Truckee's mountain winters while providing an improved putting surface.
The project went well beyond the greens.
Fourteen tee boxes were expanded or relocated, including the shared tee at Hole 12. Selected fairways were widened or improved, drainage was addressed, and some cart paths were relocated to improve playability and shot selection.
The goal wasn't to erase the original Tahoe Donner Golf Course. Its historic routing remained an important part of the course.
Instead, the project gave a 1970s golf course a substantially renewed playing surface and addressed issues that had accumulated over decades of use.
Tahoe Donner Golf Course reopened on May 28, 2021, conditions permitting, following the major 2020 improvement project.
The timing created an interesting overlap.
Tahoe Donner itself was celebrating the community's 50th anniversary in 2021 just as golfers were returning to a substantially renovated course.
That makes it easy to confuse the two anniversaries.
2021 marked 50 years of the Tahoe Donner community.
2026 marks 50 years since the completion of the 18-hole Tahoe Donner Golf Course.
The course's next era also brought a familiar connection to the community.
Golf professional Jeff Hwang grew up in Tahoe Donner before leaving the area and building a career in golf.
His professional experience included PGA West and Indian Wells Golf Resort in Southern California, followed by positions at Red Hawk Golf Resort and Petaluma Golf & Country Club before returning to Tahoe Donner.
For a golf course so closely tied to the history of the community surrounding it, there's something fitting about having someone who grew up here return to become part of its next chapter.
The 2026 Tahoe Donner Memorial Golf Tournament takes place Sunday, September 20 at Tahoe Donner Golf Course in Truckee.
The tournament has a noon shotgun start and commemorates the golf course's 50th anniversary while honoring Ali Kovach.

After the tournament, Tahoe Donner is hosting a special Member Happy Hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. celebrating 50 years of the golf course. You don't need to play in the tournament to participate in the post-tournament anniversary celebration.

The historic routing still connects today's course to the one golfers played decades ago. But the greens beneath today's players are different. Tee boxes have been expanded and relocated. Fairways and drainage have been improved. And a course that relied on some greens for more than four decades received a major reinvestment before reopening in 2021.
Fifty years is the number on the banner. But much of the playing experience underfoot belongs to a much more recent chapter in Tahoe Donner golf.
If you played Tahoe Donner for years but haven't been back since before the 2020 closure, the 50th anniversary is a good reason to see what's changed.
